I WOKE UP WITH DOE PAORO

You’ve traveled the world alone and studied in India. Tell us about your traveling experiences and how they’ve influenced your music.

After traveling and studying in India, I returned to the U.S. with a new clarity, and my first album, Slow to Love, just poured out. I’d been traveling for seven months by myself and ended up spending a month in a town at the base of the Himalayas, where I was studyingLhamo, or Tibetan opera singing. I’ve returned to India twice since that first trip to study with my Lhamo teacher. When I go back, I do a sort of self-study program. I am very disciplined—I practice three hours of yoga a day, an hour of Lhamo, an hour ofmeditation, hike in the forest, and write lyrics. I’ve written some of my best songs after returning from these experiences.

At one point, you quit music altogether. Why?

I had an idea of the kind of music I should be making, and it was derivative of other artists I liked at the time. It wasn’t going anywhere because it had already been done—I was frustrated and felt that maybe I wasn’t cut out to pursue music professionally. Ultimately, it was the best thing that happened to me, because in quitting, I killed off the ideas I had about what my music should sound like and started making what was authentic to my experience.

LAUREN CARNES X FIVE

LCP-This-Is-It

Lauren Carnes may be killing it in the wedding photography world but it was her photographs from her travels and foodie life that caught my eye.

Her personality is absolutely contagious and her joie de vivre is plain to see in her photography. She doesn't miss a single moment.

"

...something about the textures, colors, smells and sights truly awakens my soul.

LCP-Cupcake-Austin-DX5-Wallpaper

What if you were given an unlimited budget to create something, what would you do?

I would buy an old home on a large piece of land to renovate, a garden to pull fresh ingredients from, and build a natural light studio on the property complete with fabulous kitchens & prop rooms where creatives could gather, cook, photograph lovely things and dine (and wine!) together. I think there is something so wonderful about having community & fellowship meet creativity and dream of being able to host events, dinners and creative retreats on the property. It would be a place of rest, learning & inspiration for creatives, friends & family where hospitality and a beautiful, flavorful meal is always on the menu!

Where/when do you feel most like yourself?

Can I give two times? We'll go for it: First, I feel most like myself when I'm exploring new foods, cities and cultures, camera in hand, with my husband, family and/or friends (and if pet-friendly, my pup Sophie!). Whether it's a new recipe in the comfort of our own kitchen, a town just an hour from us or a country oceans away, something about the textures, colors, smells and sights truly awakens my soul. Most of my memories of joyful times incorporate these things and people and make me feel like "me."

Second, I am very much "me" when I have the chance to pour into & encourage other people and their businesses. One of my favorite things is to listen to a need and fill it, especially for creative entrepreneurs. So many people have done that for me & when I have the chance, I am so fired up for their successes & growth and thrilled to celebrate with them! It challenges me to pursue growth as I'm challenging them, and more than anything builds such great community and friendship!

THIS IS WORTH THE SCROLL

I didn't pay much attention to J.Crew until [#GIRLBOSS] Jenna Lyons stepped in as Creative Director + President and gave the brand a little slice of edginess. It's a little less country club basic and a little more tomboy chic.

Recently, their email campaign game has seriously been stepped up as well and I'm loving it.

My favorites are their full-size images with barely any text (like above). The design is minimal and clean and most importantly, it makes me want to CLICK!

However, they still have a few different templates that are all nicely put together. Here are some common ingredients that have caught my eye:

– Large, black, serif text

– Sharp photography on a crisp background

– Consistent font use

– Gifs

– Black buttons

– Black on white background

Sometimes it's difficult as a designer to show the client exactly what you envision for their marketing campaign. I usually keep a little inventory of the emails that stand out to me so I can use them later on to help illustrate a concept to a client.

JAGGED LITTLE PILL

In honor of the 20th anniversary of my childhood anthem album. (insert praise hands)

I will never forget going to her concert on the acoustic tour at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta. I remember her amazingly haunting voice filling every corner of the theatre when she sang "Your House" with nothing but a mic and a lamp. I also vividly remember waiting with my best friend for her to play I'm a Bitch and realizing that she wasn't the artist of that track.

I'm constantly changing up my desktop background and prints around my tiny apartment / studio to keep me motivated and inspired. So I thought that each week (ehh...I'll try my best) I would post free wallpaper downloads for your desktop / iPad / iPhone / iWhatever. Some will be my own, some from designers that make me have serious heart eyes.

The images will be optimized for your screens but not suitable for printing. I added a little section in my shop to offer a super affordable selection of high quality printable artwork. These files can be downloaded and printed easily so you can change up artwork in your home or office when you need something fresh!

Enjoy bébés X

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

I truly enjoy Christmas shopping. There I said it. I put a lot (maybe too much) of thought and effort into finding the perfect gifts for the fabulous people in my life. However, I know a lot of people who HATE shopping during this time. T'inquiète pas mes amis, I'll help ya out. The key is to think about what you would actually LOVE to receive and then tweak it to fit the personality and style of the person you're buying for.

Here is a little guide to get you started. Most of these gifts can be bought while wearing no pants and holding a nice glass of Bordeaux (aka ONLINE) – I can never find what I am looking for in a store.   X

1. Everyone likes good tunes – STAY GOLD FIRST First Aid Kit, BLUE FILM Lo-Fang, ZABA Glass Animals // 2. This may seem like a strange gift but I was gifted wallpaper a few years ago and have had so much fun with it – trust me – BRÅKIG Collection Wallpaper at IKEA // 3. For those of you who just can't handle shopping or wait until the last minute, here are brilliantly curated gift boxes that are created, packaged and shipped for you – BOXFOX // 4. A really superb read for those obsessed with everything French – PARIS by Edward Rutherfurd // 5. Another one of my favorite gifts I've ever been given – there is just something about washing yourself with Chanel – N˚5 The Bath Soap by CHANEL // 6. Minimal journal/agenda for the artist – I don't go anywhere without it – DOT GRID JOURNAL by Behance // 7. My man is quite difficult to shop for but I know I will kill it this year –  It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Seasons 1-5 on Amazon // 8. My dream come true. This is a perfect gift for your girl friend, boys – Simple + Refined Flower Subscription by Allison Song // 9. I wish I could cash in all the gift cards I have received in my life to buy plane tickets – Airline Gift Card by Southwest Airlines // 10. One of the things I'm most looking forward to when we move to the US is taking advantage of workshops hosted by extremely talented artists like this – STUDIO SESH with Britt Bass Turner
